Uptown Chicken

The chicken is a symbol of protection, abundance, and nurturing.

Many of the Uptown and the Hill District residents interviewed mentioned “community” as the most important aspect of life in their neighborhoods. They are thankful to the neighbors who support one another and lend a helping hand.

Flowers: Represents the many residents who enjoy growing flowers here, and pays homage to Soho Gardens, once located near the Birmingham Bridge

Pittsburgh Chicken-related Fun Fact #1!

“Chicken on the Hill” was the promotional nickname for Pittsburgh Pirate Willie Stargell’s All-Pro Chicken restaurant in the Hill District, where free chicken was given to patrons when Stargell hit a home run.

Pittsburgh Chicken-related Fun Fact #2!

“City Chicken” is a Depression-era working-class food that’s made up of breaded cubes of meat on a skewer. Despite the name, it isn’t made with chicken.
