Uptown Hummingbird

The hummingbird is a symbol of resilience and endurance.

For many people who worked in the steel mills, the city’s public staircases were the primary way to commute to and from work.

ICONS TO LOOK FOR:

Steps: An important part of infrastructure, Pittsburgh has more public staircases than any other city in the United States. There are nearly 800 sets, and 45,000 individual steps. The Bluff Steps, also known as the Duquesne University Steps, have 179 steps and were built in 1919 on the former site of the Fort Pitt Incline after it was destroyed by a fire. The Junilla Street steps in the Hill District may be the City’s oldest, thought to have been built around 1911
Jasmine, honeysuckle & roses: Represents Soho Gardens, which was near the Birmingham Bridge and was a beautiful area filled with fruit trees, jasmine, honeysuckle, and roses. These flower icons also represent the lovely community and backyard gardens in the neighborhood
Apples: Represents the orchards that once grew in Soho Gardens
Steel mill: Represents the mills, which provided employment for many longtime residents and newly arrived immigrants

The pattern in this design combines an icon that represents immigrants and leaves that symbolize new beginnings and nature.
