Uptown Goldfinch

The goldfinch represents happiness and joy.
Many artists, past and present, have connections to Uptown and the Hill District. Through their creative work, they have helped bring joy and a strong sense of identity to the community.
ICONS TO LOOK FOR:
Performing arts: The comedy and tragedy masks represent theater. Born in the Hill District, playwright August Wilson is referred to as the "theater's poet of Black America"
Film: Uptown was known as “Film Row” because of several film exchanges located along the Boulevard of the Allies. These exchanges gave theaters an early look at films. The Paramount Film Exchange Building is still in Uptown, and became a historic landmark in 2010
Tamburica: Represents the Tamburitzans—the longest-running multicultural song and dance company in the United States
Paint brush: Pays homage to John Fleenor, Charlotte Ka, “Mo” Reynolds, and the many artists in Uptown and the Hill. The icon also represents the public artworks found throughout the neighborhoods
Mosaic squares: Represents sculptor and mosaic artist James Simon, who lives and has a studio in Uptown
Music notes: Represents the musicians and musical traditions that have shaped the community
Pencils & pen: Represents the art of writing and the authors connected to the neighborhood
