The Hill District was once the heart of Pittsburgh jazz and was known as “Little Harlem” and the “Crossroads of the World” due to its vibrant cultural scene.

Jazz performer: Represents the many jazz music legends who performed in the Hill District, including Lena Horne, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane at the Crawford Grill. “Birdie” Dunlap’s Hurricane Bar and Lounge, known as the “Happy House of the Hill District,” helped nurture young musicians. The New Granada Theater hosted ballroom dancing and jazz performances, and is currently undergoing a community-driven renovation

  2. Musical instruments: The drumsticks, piano keys and trumpet icons represent the neighborhood’s rich music scene, and the many musicians connected to the Hill District, including jazz drummer Art Blakey and jazz guitarist George Benson
