The dove is a symbol of peace, love, and spirituality.

This design pays homage to the role healthcare has played in the community.

ICONS TO LOOK FOR:

  1. Sisters of Mercy: Represents Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh (founded in 1847), the first hospital in the world founded by the seven Sisters of Mercy.

  2. C-A-R-E: The word CARE, shown in American Sign Language, represents the Deaf community

  3. Pills: Represents healthcare and the medical services in the community

  4. Medical cross: Represents healthcare

  5. Dove caduceus: The dove replaces Hermes’ wings on the caduceus here symbolizing the faith-based healthcare foundations of UPMC Mercy and Duquesne University. Duquesne University’s crest features a dove representing its Catholic founding

  6. Eyes & ears: Built in 1905, the Center for Hearing and Deaf Services building was Pittsburgh’s first Eye and Ear Institute

  7. Ambulances: Founded in 1967 to serve the Hill District, Freedom House Ambulance Service was the first emergency medical service in the United States to be staffed by paramedics with medical training beyond basic first aid
