The Sankofa Bird reminds us to look to, and learn from, the past to build a better future.
ICONS TO LOOK FOR:
Sunrise & birds flying: Represents the Great Migration of African Americans to Pittsburgh’s Hill District, and the hope they had for a better life here
Connected people: Represents the strength and importance of community
Roots: Represents the roots the community put down in the neighborhood, and the feeling among many residents that those connections were severed by redevelopment projects
Camera shutter: Honors the photographer, Charles “Teenie” Harris, whose photographs documented life in the neighborhood
Civic Arena: Represents the Civic Arena, whose construction physically cut off the Hill District from Downtown, and displaced many residents
Row houses: Represents the homes in the area
Hill House: Represents an important association in the neighborhood, referred to as the “Heart of the Hill”
Newspapers: Represents African American newspapers, including The Pittsburgh Courier and The Pittsburgh Mystery, which documented the life and times of the Black community, enabling us to more easily look to the past
